Wärtsilä’s control system for Harvey Gulf LNG fueling facility

The contract for the control system for a shore-based liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueling facility in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, USA, has been awarded to Wärtsilä.

The facility is owned by Harvey Gulf International Marine, a major owner-operator of offshore supply and specialty vessels headquartered in New Orleans. It will be used to supply fuel to Harvey Gulf’s fleet of LNG powered platform supply vessels (PSV), and will be the first source of LNG fuel in the Gulf of Mexico. The order was placed in July, 2014.

The Wärtsilä scope of supply comprises the control cabinets, the PLCs, computers, software programming and service commissioning. It is designed to enable the entire fuelling process to be fully controlled from the control room onboard the HARVEY ENERGY class platform supply vessels, thus making the fuelling far more efficient and safer than would be otherwise possible. Delivery is scheduled for November, 2014.

“The Harvey Gulf PSVs are to be fitted with the Wärtsilä LNGPac gas control system, so it was natural that the same basic technology should also be used for the shore fuelling facility. There is a growing need for an LNG fuelling infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico, so this represents an important step forward. The new fuelling facility will enable the refuelling of offshore supply vessels powered by LNG. It will also have the capability to provide a fuel source for LNG fuelled cargo ships operating in the Houston – New Orleans region.

Harvey Gulf currently has six LNG fuelled PSVs under construction, all of which will be powered by Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines. The vessels will also have various other Wärtsilä equipment onboard, including the Wärtsilä LNGPac gas storage and supply system. The company, additionally, has two diesel-electric construction vessels in production equipped with Wärtsilä 32 engines and other Wärtsilä solutions.

Finland: Wartsila to Provide Propulsion for Harvey’s New LNG OSVs

Finland-based Wärtsilä, the marine industry’s leading gas solutions provider, has been awarded a contract to deliver an integrated propulsion system for two additional LNG offshore support vessels (OSV) to Harvey Gulf International Marine.

The order, placed last week,  takes Harvey Gulf to a fleet of four LNG OSVs on order, establishing the company as the world’s second largest operator of LNG powered OSVs. Wärtsilä will deliver an integrated system that includes the dual-fuel machinery, electrical and automation package, complete propulsion, and also the LNG fuel storage and gas conditioning system. The LNG storage capacity provides for more than a week of vessel operational time.

Rolls-Royce To Deliver World’s First 100% LNG-Powered Tugboat

Rolls-Royce Marine has signed a contract to deliver highly efficient engines and propulsion systems for the world’s first Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) powered tugs.

The two vessels have been ordered by Norwegian company Buksér og Berging AS and will enter service in late 2013 for Statoil, the international energy company, and Gassco, the operator of the gas transportation network off the Norwegian coast.

This is a breakthrough for our Bergen gas engines and cutting edge propulsion technology. The choice our customer has made highlights the industry leading engine performance, fuel consumption and low methane emissions that Rolls-Royce can offer, which is now being applied to tugs.

In addition to two gas engines and a single LNG tank, Rolls-Royce will deliver a mechanical direct driven azimuth propulsion system for each tug that will provide the quickest response time for manoeuvring; which is critically important for tug operators. The combined power and propulsion system will also enable the lowest possible fuel consumption in all operating modes. Rolls-Royce will also provide automation and control systems for the two escort vessels.

Commercial Director at Buksér og Berging AS, Vetle Sverdrup said:

We wanted to base the design of the new tugs on the spark ignition lean burn engine concept, and the ability to accommodate direct drive in addition to a low emission profile. The propulsion system on high performance escort tugs needs to accommodate rapid load pick up over the entire load range. Due to the above we chose to work closely with Rolls-Royce on this project

The scope of supply for Rolls-Royce in this contract is:

  • 2x US35 Aquamaster
  • 2x Bergen C6 Ing engines, mechanical drive
  • RR Acon control and monitoring for gas system
  • 1x AGA Cryo LNG tank with LNG system based on two coldboxes

The LNG system is designed by AGA Cryo and integrated with the Rolls-Royce propulsion system. This single tank LNG system has got full gas redundancy approved by NMD (Norwegian Maritime Directorate) i.e. no diesel back up is required.

The gas engines can operate on low load with out any restriction and have a very quick and step less ramp up time from 0 to 100% load.

Bunkering:
The fuel system is designed for weekly bunkering intervals and the bunkering time is estimated to be 45 minutes. Bunkering will be carried out by the ship’s crew.

Nox emissions are lower at low engines loads, which are the reverse trend of most diesel engines, making it the optimal solution for tugs which are spending most of the time at lower engine loads.

USA: Wartsila Wins LNG Propulsion Equipment Contract for Offshore Vessels

Wärtsilä has been awarded a contract in October 2011 to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion equipment for two advanced offshore supply vessels owned by Harvey Gulf International Marine. These supply vessels will be the first ever U.S. flagged platform supply vessels (PSV) to be powered by clean, safe and efficient LNG. The contract includes options for supplying propulsion equipment for additional follow-on vessels.

Wärtsilä will deliver an integrated system that includes the dual-fuel machinery, electrical and automation package, complete propulsion, and also the LNG fuel storage and handling components. The STX Marine Inc SV310DF Offshore Support Vessels will be powered by Wärtsilä 6-cylinder 34DF dual-fuel engines. The LNG storage capacity of 290 cubic meters (m3), enables more than a week of vessel operational time. In addition, the vessels will carry 5520 tons of deadweight at load line and have a transit speed of 13 knots. The vessels are scheduled for delivery in two years and will operate in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr Shane Guidry, Harvey Gulf International Marine’s Chairman and CEO, states that the stringent governmental demands for reduced emissions, together with predictions that availability of ultra low sulphur diesel fuel will be restricted, caused the company to consider the use of gas as fuel. “We’re committed to bringing the world’s best technologies to our customers, and these vessels with Wärtsilä’s integrated system based on the use of LNG further demonstrates Harvey Gulf’s Going Green Vision,” he says.

This dual-fuel capability means that when running in gas mode, the environmental impact is minimized since nitrogen oxides (NOx) are reduced by some 85 per cent  compared to diesel operation, sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions are completely eliminated as gas contains no sulphur, and emissions of CO2 are also lowered. Natural gas has no residuals, and thus the production of particulates is practically non-existent.

The shipping industry finds the operational savings that gas offers to be very compelling. Similarly, the significant environmental benefits that LNG fuel provides are of increasing importance. With fossil fuel prices, and especially the cost of low sulphur marine fuel, likely to continue to escalate, gas is an obvious economic alternative.

USA: Wartsila, Shell Ink Cooperation Deal to Promote LNG as Marine Fuel

Wärtsilä, the marine industry’s leading solutions provider, and Shell Oil Company have signed a Joint Co-operation Agreement aimed at promoting and accelerating the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel. The agreement was signed in August 2011 and will run for several years.

Supplies of low cost, low emissions LNG fuel will be made available to Wärtsilä natural gas powered vessel operators, and other customers by Shell. The Joint Cooperation Agreement will focus first on supplies from the US Gulf Coast, and then later expand their efforts to cover a broader geographical range.

Gas fuelled marine engines are seen as being a logical means for ship owners and operators to comply with increasingly stringent environmental legislation. This agreement aims at increasing and easing the availability of natural gas for marine engine use, as well as developing the supply chain and infrastructure to facilitate the bunkering of LNG fuel. The two companies will jointly move these developments to marine markets in order to enhance its rapid introduction and use.

Norway: Rem Offshore Orders LNG Powered Offshore Vessel at Kleven Maritime

Kleven Maritime has signed a new contract with Rem Offshore for delivery of one LNG powered offshore vessel. With this new contract, Kleven Maritime’s order reserve increases to 9 vessels at a combined value of 3.3 billion NOK.

The vessel is of Wärtsilä Ship Design and is scheduled for delivery from Kleven Verft in Ulsteinvik in December 2012.

Kleven Verft is currently building two vessels for Rem Offshore and has previously delivered 11 ships to the company. It is thus a long running partnership which has now been extended with yet another vessel.

”This contract manifests Kleven Maritime’s position as a leading supplier of LNG powered vessels, and as the country’s largest Norwegian-owned shipbuilding group. It illustrates the positive result we achieve through close collaboration with customers over time, such as Rem Offshore,” says Ståle Rasmussen, Chief executive of Kleven Maritime.

Kleven has previously delivered 5 LNG powered ships, and has further three on the order book for future delivery. Through innovation and widespread use of robotics, Kleven Maritime is going against the flow and building an ever larger share of the ships in Norway.

“We are optimistic about the market going forward and will continue to target this market – LNG propulsion is environmentally friendly and progressive. In addition, the new ship has good capabilities for loading both on and below deck,” says Åge Remøy of Rem Offshore.

The vessel is of the type VS 499 LNG PSV with a length of 89,6 meters, beam 21.0 meters and a deck space of 1 030m2. Dead weight is around 6 500 tonnes. 4 engines with “dual fuel” propulsion (flexible switch between LNG and diesel propulsion) is environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient. Furthermore, the vessel is Light ice class (Ice C), equipped for oil recovery (Oil Rec NOFO 2009) and rescue missions (Standby Vessel).
