Marine Well Containment Company (MWCC) announced today that Mobile, Ala. has been selected as the shorebase location to house the well containment company’s subsea umbilicals, risers and flowlines (SURF) equipment.
MWCC’s SURF equipment is an integral part of the company’s expanded containment system (ECS) that will enhance the company’s well containment capabilities in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. MWCC will utilize the facilities and services of Technip USA and Core Industries to store, maintain and test the equipment.
Technip USA, a leader in subsea project management, engineering and construction for the energy industry, and Core Industries, a multi-faceted firm with vast industry knowledge and close proximity to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, are well equipped to provide MWCC’s required services. MWCC is confident in its decision to partner with these companies as together they offer significant storage, maintenance, testing and deployment capabilities, as well as expertise, which are essential to achieving MWCC’s mission.
“Should our SURF equipment be needed to respond to a well control incident in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico, we know that we have the right support in place to respond safely and effectively,” said MWCC CEO, Marty Massey. “MWCC is committed to serving the U.S. Gulf and is proud to be a part of the Mobile community.”
The selection of Mobile for its SURF shorebase also allowed MWCC to tap into the skilled and industry-experienced workforce of Alabama to achieve its mission to be continuously ready to respond to a deepwater well control incident in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The company will soon be transporting all of its SURF equipment to the Mobile shorebase where it will be properly stored and maintained at all times.
MWCC’s expanded system is scheduled for delivery starting later this year, and will further advance the company’s deepwater well containment technology and capabilities. The ECS will be able to cap and flow a well in up to 10,000 feet and will have the capacity to contain up to 100,000 barrels of liquid per day.
The Walker Ridge Block 98 Well No. 1 encountered more than 400 feet (122 m) of net pay. The well is located approximately 190 miles (308 km) off the Louisiana coast in 6,127 feet (1,868 m) of water and was drilled to a depth of 31,866 feet (9,713 m).
“The Coronado discovery demonstrates how Chevron is achieving its strategy of superior exploration performance,” said George Kirkland, vice chairman, Chevron Corporation. “The discovery adds to our global portfolio of high-quality opportunities for future growth.”
“The Coronado discovery continues our string of exploration successes in the Lower Tertiary Trend, where Chevron is advancing multiple projects,” said Gary Luquette, president, Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company. “It also highlights the importance of the deepwater Gulf of Mexico as a source of domestic energy for the United States.”
The well results are still being evaluated, and additional work is needed to determine the extent of the resource. Chevron, with a 40 percent working interest in the prospect, is the operator of the Coronado discovery well. Other owners are ConocoPhillips with 35 percent, a subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation with 15 percent and Venari Offshore LLC with 10 percent.
Chevron is one of the largest leaseholders in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently constructing the Jack/St. Malo and Big Foot projects, which are scheduled to begin production in 2014.The company is also conducting appraisal activities at its previously announced Buckskin and Moccasin discoveries, also in the Lower Tertiary Trend.
Total announces a significant oil discovery at its North Platte prospect on Garden Banks Block 959 in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The discovery well encountered several hundred feet of net oil pay in Lower Tertiary sands which included several high-quality intervals.
Total estimates this discovery can have a potential of several hundred million barrels of oil. Further appraisal will be needed to confirm its size and commerciality.
“The North Platte discovery represents another example of Total’s bold exploration strategy targeting large exploration opportunities. It also demonstrates the efficiency of our alliance with Cobalt signed in 2009,” said Marc Blaizot, Total’s Senior Vice President Exploration.
Total is in a strategic alliance with Cobalt International Energy to explore for oil in the Deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The North Platte discovery is the first Lower Tertiary Wilcox formation well drilled by the Alliance. The results of the well confirm the northern extension of the Wilcox formation and the presence of liquid hydrocarbons. Therefore, this validates the major potential of this new exploration area of the Gulf of Mexico in which Total holds a substantial acreage position with several follow-on prospects.
North Platte is located in a water depth of approximately 4,400 feet (1,340 m) and was drilled to a total depth of approximately 34,500 feet (10,520 m). Total holds a 40% interest in the North Platte discovery along with Cobalt (60%, operator).
INPEX CORPORATION has through its subsidiary, Teikoku Oil (North America) Co., Ltd., it has agreed to acquire a 7.2% participating interest in the Lucius project which includes portions of Keathley Canyon blocks 874, 875, 918 and 919 in the deepwater of the U.S.Gulf of Mexico, from a subsidiary of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko), an American independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company.
After the joint venture agreement is finalized, the Lucius project will continue to be operated by Anadarko with a 27.8% participating interest, with the following companies participating:
The Lucius project is located offshore approximately 380km southwest of Port Fourchon, Louisiana with a water depth at approximately 2,160m. Anadarko and co-venturers made a Final Investment Decision (FID) to develop this project in December 2011, and the first production of crude oil and natural gas is expected to start in the latter half of 2014.
Crude oil and natural gas pumped from the Lucius project will be processed with a truss spar floating facility (Spar) with the capacity to produce in excess of 80,000 barrels of oil per day and 450million cubic feet of natural gas per day. Processed crude oil and natural gas will then be exported to the onshore facilities in Louisiana via a subsea pipeline.
INPEX has participated in oil and gas development projects in the shallow waters of the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. In February 2011, INPEX also participated in the Walker Ridge 95/96/139/140 Blocks in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico. The participation in the Lucius project will enhance INPEX’s experience and expertise of the operation in the deepwater projects and contribute to continuous enhancement of its E&P activities as one of the measures for growth as described in “Medium- to Long-Term Vision of INPEX.”
INPEX will be expanding its exploration, development and production activities in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
