In her right element, the compact 106.5 m long and 24.5 m wide vessel looks very impressive.
The SX148 design will carry out a multitude of diverse tasks for Statoil, including inspection, maintenance and repair of subsea oil installations, alongside scale treatment and RFO operations. The top speed is 16 knots. The ship has a crew capacity of 90, and capacity to carry a litany of essential subsea tools, thanks to a clever configuration whereby hull space is maximised and equipment is integrated within the large hangar area.
HSE has been a major focus for the project partners, this includes a customized module handling system (MHS) integrated in the ship’s hangar for the safe launch and retrieval of subsea modules weighing up to 70 tons.
All operational personnel are gathered in one area directly above the hangar, with panoramic windows in the control room giving a full overview of this key activity area. Also, the ship has been developed to meet the highest working environment standards. She is a comfort class COMF-V (3) vessel, with low noise and vibration levels. The ship also carries the Clean Design notation.
Environmental initiatives have been taken, including the diesel electric propulsion, which reduces atmospheric emissions, while the ship’s electrical winches mean there will be absolutely zero emissions of hydraulic oil.
Market trends and very good feedback from the first ship in operation triggers Blue Ship Invest to contract another four platform supply vessels (PSVs) of the PX121 design from ULSTEIN. All four are scheduled for delivery in 2013.
“The investment company Blue Ship Invest received its first vessel, ‘Blue Fighter’, from Ulstein Verft in January this year, and will receive the second vessel in Q3. “’Blue Fighter’ has been working for the oil company Apache for several months, and we have received very good feedback from Remøy Shipping, who manages the vessel on our behalf. The feedback, combined with developments in the PSV market, leads us to contract a series of another four PSVs of the same design,” says CEO Gunvor Ulstein in Ulstein Group.
Gunvor Ulstein adds that while ULSTEIN’s expertise is in design, system solutions and ship construction, ship management is not a part of the company’s business scope. “We will make arrangements for the management of the vessels, but I emphasize that all six vessels are for sale,” she says.
Captain Inge Gjelsten gives ‘Blue Fighter’ the following assessment: “I have worked on board several newbuilds, but ’Blue Fighter’ is the best of them by far. A vessel of this type is my preferred choice for the North Sea. ‘Blue Fighter’ is remarkably efficient and comfortable in all weather conditions. Wind and seas have little impact on the vessel’s performance compared to conventional PSVs. We can compare performance directly when steaming on the same tracks to the oil fields: With the same weather conditions and 3-5 metres head sea within 30 degrees of the bow, our ship can easily and comfortably maintain a speed of 12-13 knots, while the other vessels have to reduce their speed to 7-8 knots. The higher speed is a result of the ‘X-BOW® effect’. Also, due to the position of the stabilisation tanks on board, ‘Blue Fighter’ operates extremely well when wind and seas approach from the side.”
PX121 is a medium-sized platform supply vessel, with a length of 83.4 metres and a beam of 18 metres. It has a cargo deck of 875 square metres and a load capacity of 4200 tonnes (dwt). It has a maximum speed of approximately 15 knots and modern accommodation for 24 persons.
Efficiency and flexibility has been the focus in the development of this design. The ship is adapted to the requirements for longer and deeper boreholes and activities further from shore. In addition to tanks for oil, water and drilling fluids, the vessel has four stainless steel tanks for flammable liquids. The vessel is equipped with a dynamic positioning system Class II and meets the requirements of DNV’s Clean Design and ICE-C notations. The ship is also equipped with catalysts for all four main engines.
The X-BOW® hull line design offers efficiency over a wide draught range, which is important for PSVs as they frequently operate with varying loads. Moreover, the X-BOW has unique, advantageous qualities in terms of motion and propulsion efficiency in moderate and heavy seas. Both the hull and choice of propulsion system make the vessel particularly suited for North Sea and North Atlantic conditions.

Last Saturday, on March 24th, a naming ceremony for Olympic Shipping’s new Platform Supply Vessel took place in Ålesund. The naming of the vessel, now called Olympic Energy was performed by Godmother Marianne Synnes.
After the ceremony, the ship was open to the public and about 1500 people used the chance to study the ship up close.
Olympic Shipping AS, STX OSV and the Training Office of Maritime Studies were represented at the deck, where those who were interested could get further information about the ship and job opportunities in the business. Olympic Energy is a PSV 06 LNG design, to be delivered from STX OSV, later this month. The vessel is designed as a platform supply vessel for worldwide operations and transport of general cargo for offshore industry.
The vessel is of environmental friendly design, with low resistance hull shape designed for high speed and low fuel consumptions. Its main engines are driven by liquefied natural gas.

Ulstein Group, a group of companies mainly known for its ship building and ship design activities reported today that the first platform supply vessel (PSV) newbuilding of the PX121 design from ULSTEIN®, M/V Blue Fighter, was named in a formal ceremony at Ulstein Verft, Norway on 12 January.
The vessel, 83.4 m of overall length, is the first of two PSVs of the new design under construction at Ulstein Verft for Blue Ship Invest, a shipping company in ULSTEIN. Blue Fighter’s sister vessel will be delivered in Q3 of 2012.

Kleven Maritime has signed a new contract with Rem Offshore for delivery of one LNG powered offshore vessel. With this new contract, Kleven Maritime’s order reserve increases to 9 vessels at a combined value of 3.3 billion NOK.
Kleven Verft is currently building two vessels for Rem Offshore and has previously delivered 11 ships to the company. It is thus a long running partnership which has now been extended with yet another vessel.
”This contract manifests Kleven Maritime’s position as a leading supplier of LNG powered vessels, and as the country’s largest Norwegian-owned shipbuilding group. It illustrates the positive result we achieve through close collaboration with customers over time, such as Rem Offshore,” says Ståle Rasmussen, Chief executive of Kleven Maritime.
Kleven has previously delivered 5 LNG powered ships, and has further three on the order book for future delivery. Through innovation and widespread use of robotics, Kleven Maritime is going against the flow and building an ever larger share of the ships in Norway.
“We are optimistic about the market going forward and will continue to target this market – LNG propulsion is environmentally friendly and progressive. In addition, the new ship has good capabilities for loading both on and below deck,” says Åge Remøy of Rem Offshore.
The vessel is of the type VS 499 LNG PSV with a length of 89,6 meters, beam 21.0 meters and a deck space of 1 030m2. Dead weight is around 6 500 tonnes. 4 engines with “dual fuel” propulsion (flexible switch between LNG and diesel propulsion) is environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient. Furthermore, the vessel is Light ice class (Ice C), equipped for oil recovery (Oil Rec NOFO 2009) and rescue missions (Standby Vessel).
Ulstein Design & Solutions has signed two ship design contracts with the Brazilian Shipyard Alianca S.A for the building of two ULSTEIN PX105 platform supply vessels with the X-BOW® hull line design for the Brazilian shipowner CBO.
The contracts are worth approximately NOK 150 million. The contracts are for the delivery of design, engineering, main equipment and building follow-up for two large platform supply vessels of the ULSTEIN PX105 design type.
“These contracts are of great importance to ULSTEIN. There are major investment activities on the Brazilian continental shelf and there are wide-reaching plans for the area. It is important to position ourselves in this market”, says COO in Design & Solutions, Tore Ulstein, and continues: “We are very happy that a trendsetting company like CBO once again has chosen ULSTEIN and the PX105 design for its fleet development.”
“CBO is the first to build X-BOW® vessels in Brazil, which proves that we are an innovative company constantly looking for new solutions”, says CBO director Alfredo Naslausky. The company currently has four ULSTEIN-designed PSVs under construction at the Alianca yard in Rio de Janeiro. The contracts for two more PX105 vessels bring this number up to six.
With the current trend of oil and gas production taking place ever further from land, the demand for large platform supply vessels (PSVs) is increasing. The P105 and PX105 designs, both large PSVs with a conventional bow and an X-BOW® respectively, have become leading designs since introduced to the market. “The size and versatility of these vessels make them suitable for many markets and operations. This has given ULSTEIN a leading position in the market for this type of vessel”, concludes Tore Ulstein.
“The vessels will go into eight-year contracts, with options for extension, for the Brazilian state oil company Petrobras. The vessels will be number five and six built for CBO with the X-BOW® hull line design to be constructed and permanently stationed in Brazil, which is also exciting”, says sales manager for OSV designs at ULSTEIN, Lars Ståle Skoge.
N-KOM’s (Nakilat-Keppel Offshore Marine) new state-of-the-art dry dock at Ras Laffan Port has received its first ship – the RasGas’ chartered LNG Vessel, Simaisma. This historic event marks a new phase for the RasGas fleet and RasGas’ drive to ensure the security and reliability of LNG supply.
RasGas chartered vessel, Simaisma, with its 23-strong crew, Captain Ilias-Chrysovaladis Kattidenios and Technical Director Mr Andreas Spertos of Maran Gas Maritime were greeted by Mr Tom Mc Hale, RasGas’ Acting Managing Director and his wife Mrs Sinead Mc Hale who is the ship’s sponsor. Together, they jointly presented a gift to Captain Ilias-Chrysovaladis Kattidenios in commemoration of this first dry docking at the new facilities.
Tom Mc Hale stated: “This is an important milestone for RasGas, our shipping operations and the country, placing Qatar at the forefront of not only regional, but global port development and the shipping industry.”
To ensure the highest standards in safety, the RasGas fleet of 27 vessels demands regular maintenance and has, until recently, required periodic dry docking abroad as Qatar did not have the necessary facilities. The completion of N-KOM’s new facility in Ras Laffan Port reduces the need for docking in foreign ports for maintenance and repair – further underlining RasGas’ position as a secure and reliable supplier of LNG with a sustainable model that ensures the integrity of their supply chain.
“RasGas aims to provide fast, secure and cost-efficient shipping solutions to its clients. The new dry dock at N-KOM facilitates this and is another first for Qatar” added Mc Hale.
