UK: BP Places Order for 4 Platform Supply Vessels

BP announced today it has ordered four new platform support vessels (PSV) to help deliver its long term business strategy in the North Sea. The vessels will be deployed to support its West of Shetland (WoS) and Norwegian operations and be delivered between the winter of 2013 and summer of 2014.

The purpose built and highly specified vessels have been designed to provide long term support to BP’s North Sea business and will provide the capabilities BP requires to deliver its strategy more efficiently and safely. The vessels will have oil spill response capability and special tanks to transport fluids required for planned enhanced oil recovery (EOR) schemes.

Performance and safety will also be further improved by having dedicated crews on long term hire, minimising turnover and enhancing familiarity with BP’s processes.

Trevor Garlick, Regional President for BP North Sea, said, “Our long term commitment to the North Sea gives us the confidence to make major investments in vital support services. These new vessels will provide BP with a number of safety and commercial benefits, as well as allow for the greater deployment of technology. Improving our capability to recover more oil from our reservoirs is crucial to the future of the North Sea.”

The announcement is also positive news for the local economies in Scotland and Norway, as nearly 80% of the total project and operating costs will be spent there. The operating and maintenance work will be locally supplied and officers and crew will be UK and Norwegian qualified mariners. The vessels’ operators will support seafarer’s development by sponsoring personnel through their professional qualifications, including an Officer Cadet training scheme.

Mark Hardie, UK Logistics Manager for BP’s North Sea Region, said: “This is a significant investment in BP’s North Sea marine capability and will bring a number of business and local benefits from late 2013 onwards. The UK dedicated vessels will be based and maintained in Aberdeen.”

The arrangement is structured such that BP Shipping has contracted Hyundai to build the vessels and then hire them to BP Exploration Operating Company on a 15 year bareboat term charter. This project is consistent with BP’s strategy for marine offshore supply vessels that promotes vessel ownership where long term ‘life of field’ can be demonstrated.

Norway: Ulstein Launches Blue Prosper PSV

Norway’s Ulstein Verft yesterday succesfully launched a new PSV, Blue Prosper (Yard no. 294), the second of two medium-sized platform supply vessels (PSV) of the new PX121 design from ULSTEIN® for Blue Ship Invest.

The platform supply vessel was launched from the dock after the final paintwork had been carried out inside the dockhall. The vessel is due for delivery in August this year.

Ulstein Verft was contracted to build the two vessels for Blue Ship Invest, a shipping company in ULSTEIN, at the end of 2010, and the first vessel, M/V Blue Fighter was delivered in January 2011

The vessel is built with the X-BOW® hull line design, which is particularly well-suited for this type of vessel. The X-BOW offers efficiency over a wide draught range, which is important for PSVs as they frequently operate with varying loads. Moreover, the X-BOW has unique, advantageous qualities in terms of motion and propulsion efficiency in heavy seas. Both the hull and choice of propulsion system make the vessel particularly suited for North Sea and North Atlantic conditions. The vessel is equipped with a dynamic positioning system IMO Class II.

The ship has a length of 83.4 metres and a beam of 18 metres. It has a cargo deck of 875 square metres and a load capacity of 4200 tonnes (dwt). The ship meets the requirements of DNV’s Clean Design notation and is prepared for fire-fighting class Fi-Fi II. It has a maximum speed of circa 15 knots and modern accommodation for 24 persons.

India: Cochin Shipyard Delivers PSV to Norwegian Owner

Cochin Shipyard recently delivered a Platform Supply Vessel “Brage Trader” to M/s Brage Supplier K S, Norway. This is the fourth of a series of the high technology offshore vessel that have been constructed and delivered by CSL this financial year.

The vessel is of PSV 09 CD type designed by STX OSV Norway and are classed under the Rules and Regulations of Det Norske Veritas and is flagged under the Norwegian regulations. The 88 x 19 Meter vessel is a high end Diesel Electric PSV with by 4 Nos 1665 KW Diesel gen. sets and 2 Nos 2200 KW contra rotating propellers. The vessel with Grade II Dynamic Positioning features has been assigned the ‘CLEAN’ design notation by DNV signifying the highest levels of environmental compliance.

The vessel with accommodation for 42 persons also meets the requirements of COMF class signifying high comfort levels due to special arrangements to attain very low levels of noise and vibration. The vessel has special stainless steel tanks with Nitrogen inerting arrangements to carry low flash liquids and is capable of all other normal offshore supply operations.

Brage Trader PSV will be operated by Simon Møkster Shipping AS from Norway.

Norway: Naming Ceremony for Olympic Energy PSV

Last Saturday, on March 24th, a naming ceremony for Olympic Shipping’s new Platform Supply Vessel took place in Ålesund. The naming of the vessel, now called Olympic Energy was performed by Godmother Marianne Synnes.

After the ceremony, the ship was open to the public and about 1500 people used the chance to study the ship up close.

Olympic Shipping AS, STX OSV and the Training Office of Maritime Studies were represented at the deck, where those who were interested could get further information about the ship and job opportunities in the business.  Olympic Energy is a PSV 06 LNG design, to be delivered from STX OSV, later this month. The vessel is designed as a platform supply vessel for worldwide operations and transport of general cargo for offshore industry.

The vessel is of environmental friendly design, with low resistance hull shape designed for high speed and low fuel consumptions. Its main engines are driven by liquefied natural gas.

Norway: STX OSV Brevik Shipyard Hands Over PSV Island Captain

On Thursday the 16th of February, Island Offshore (IO) took delivery of the MV Island Captain, the newest addition the growing IO fleet. The godmother for the vessel is Mrs. Tonje Tiley from ConocoPhillips.

The MV Island Captain’s sister vessel, the MV Island Centurion was delivered in October 2011. The two vessels are number 5 and 6 in the series of UT 776 CD design vessels built at STX OSV Brevik.

The two vessels will commence a 7 year firm contract plus options with Schlumberger as well stimulation vessels in 2013, and will undertake a major mobilization prior to this. Island Patriot and Island Commander are currently engaged as well stimulation vessels.

BP Hires PSV ‘Sea Brasil’

Deep Sea Supply Plc announces that the PSV ‘Sea Brasil’ has been awarded a long term charter contract with BP Brasil for operations in Brazil.

Firm period of the contract is 3 years, with 3 x 1 year options after expiry of the firm period. The vessel will  commence the contract upon delivery from the yard in Brazil. The naming ceremony for the vessel was held  at STX OSV Niteroi in Brazil on November 14, 2011.

The ‘Sea  Leopard’ PSV will act as forerunner to ‘Sea Brasil’ on this contract.

Edison Chouest Orders PSV in Poland

REMONTOWA SHIPBUILDING S.A has signed a contract for building of a Platform Supply Vessel for Edison Chouest Offshore from Louisiana, USA.

New building vessel is continuation of the series of four units of the same type which has been started last year. She will be built according to the project elaborated by polish design office MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Ltd from Gdynia. The vessel will be equipped with Diesel – Electric propulsion system allowing most cost efficient exploitation, reduction of fuel consumption and lower emission of NOx and SOx to the atmosphere.

Working deck of 1000 m2 will enable to carry high-volume goods, which makes that vessel the biggest one in her class. Technically advanced vessel will operate the complex deep-water operations in the region of South America and Africa.

The vessel will be equipped with Class 2 dynamic positioning system and fitted to operations in world – wide sea areas, in each weather conditions. After completion of the construction and carriage of complex sea trials, the vessel will be delivered to the Owner in the fourth quarter of 2013. The contract includes an option to build another, sister vessel.

Norway: Ulstein Delivers Blue Fighter PSV

Ulstein Verft delivered M/V Blue Fighter, the first of two medium-sized platform supply vessels (PSV) of the new PX121 design from ULSTEIN® to Blue Ship Invest, on 19 January 2012.

“The two vessels were ordered based on market trends showing a future increase in demand for this type of PSV. We have entered into an agreement with Remøy Shipping for the management of Blue Fighter and we are negotiating interesting contracts for the ship. In the first instance the vessel will enter the North Sea spot market,” says Gunvor Ulstein, CEO of Ulstein Group and Managing Director of Ulstein Shipping.

Ulstein Verft was contracted to build the two vessels for Blue Ship Invest, a shipping company in ULSTEIN, at the end of 2010, and the first vessel, yard number 291, is delivered to the agreed terms.

The second vessel is due to be delivered from Ulstein Verft in Q3 of 2012.

“The delivery of the first PX121 confirms Ulstein Verft’s ability to build prototype vessels. Experienced people, streamlined processes and a well-established project organisation make us a competitive and reliable shipbuilding partner for advanced offshore support vessels,” says Karsten Sævik, Managing Director of Ulstein Verft.

Efficiency and flexibility has been the focus in the development of the PX121 design. With optimised tank capacities and flexible and segregated tank arrangements, the multifunctional vessel is suitable for many types of supply contracts. The ship is optimised for certain types of operations and adapted to the requirements for longer and deeper boreholes and activities further from shore. In addition to tanks for oil, water and drilling fluids, the vessel has four stainless steel tanks for flammable liquids.

Ulstein Power & Control has delivered a substantial amount of equipment to the vessel, including switchboards, the information and communication system ULSTEIN COM®, the navigation system ULSTEIN NAV and the integrated automation system ULSTEIN IAS®.
