DeepOcean Pens Long Term Charter Deal for New OSCV

Norway’s DeepOcean has entered into a contract for long term charter of an offshore support and construction vessel (OSCV) from Rem Ship AS.

 “DeepOcean is established as a leading subsea services and installation contractor in the North Sea. In order to maintain and strengthen our leading position in this market, we are currently investing in our fleet of owned and chartered vessels.” says DeepOcean AS President Mads Bardsen.

The new build is a MT6022 design, with length of 108 meters and 22 meters breadth. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2014.

In addition to the new build, DeepOcean has already chartered the Rem Forza from Rem Ship AS. The vessel will be fitted with an AHC offshore crane and two work class ROVs and associated Launch and Recovery Systems.

Cargill, UNIPEC UK to Charter Only Eco-Friendly Ships

Cargill, one of the world’s leading international transporters, and UNIPEC UK Company Ltd, trader of crude oil and oil products, announced today that they will only charter the more efficient vessels operating in the shipping market. This commitment is the first of its kind in the industry to reduce the existing fleet carbon emissions.

The announcement, from Cargill, Huntsman Corporation and UNIPEC UK who combined charter over 350 million tonnes of commodities annually, signifies a milestone for the vessel fuel efficiency ratings system, the Existing Vessel Design Index (EVDI), created by ship vetting specialist RightShip and published on ShippingEfficiency.org – an initiative launched by the Carbon War Room and RightShip to increase information flows around international shipping’s energy efficiency, as an GHG Emissions Rating (A-G rating) benchmarking system. The efficiency ratings system – containing efficiency information on over 60,000 vessels including container ships, tankers, bulk carriers, cargo ships – enables charterers to instantly see a ship’s theoretical greenhouse gas emissions and relative energy efficiency as determined by RightShip’s EVDI rated from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient), compared to ships of similar size and type.

“Cargill has introduced a senior management override on the use of the least energy efficiency vessels. By choosing the more efficient vessel available to us, we are making a strong statement to the market,” commented Jonathan Stoneley, Environment and Compliance Manager, Cargill Ocean Transportation. “We hope this action will demonstrate to ship owners that they can and should do more in terms of efficiency, and that the market will reward them and will also show other charterers the decision support tools available if they want to operate more efficiently. We will work together with customers, as best appropriate, to help them meet their environmental objectives linked to transportation and this rating system.”

Shell Hires Transocean’s 4 Newbuild UDW Drillships (South Korea)

Transocean Ltd.  announced that it has been awarded 10-year contracts for four newbuild dynamically positioned ultra-deepwater drillships by Royal Dutch Shell (Shell).

Shipyard delivery for the first drillship is scheduled for mid-2015. The remaining three drillships are expected to be delivered from the shipyard at approximately six-month intervals thereafter. After customer acceptance, the contracts are expected to commence in 2015 and 2016, contributing an estimated revenue backlog of $7.6 billion, excluding mobilization. The aggregate capital investment for the four newbuild rigs is an estimated $3.0 billion, excluding capitalized interest.

All four drillships have advanced capabilities: each is designed to operate in water depths of up to 12,000 feet and drill wells to 40,000 feet. Featuring state-of-the-art equipment, including Transocean’s patented dual-activity drilling technology, the newbuild drillships will possess industry-leading hoisting capacity. The drillships will also have a variable deckload capacity of 23,000 metric tons and feature enhanced well completion capabilities. In addition, each newbuild rig will be outfitted with two 15,000 psi blowout preventers (BOPs), which are expected to reduce customer non-productive time between wells. The four newbuild drillships will be able to accommodate a future upgrade to a 20,000 psi BOP, when it becomes available. The rigs will also feature diesel engines configured to comply with anticipated Tier III International Maritime Organization (IMO) emissions standards.

These contracts add 40 years of rig work to our revenue backlog, expand and upgrade our ultra-deepwater fleet, improve our fleet mix and provide an opportunity to expand our relationship with an important customer with which we have 40 years of experience in advancing the state of the art in offshore drilling technology,” said Steven L. Newman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Transocean Ltd. “We look forward to providing Shell with incremental value through the addition of these seventh-generation, ultra-deepwater drillships.”

Peter Sharpe, Shell’s Executive Vice President, Wells, said, “Shell continues to develop its deepwater operations and modernize its contracted rig fleet at fair market rates. These state-of-the-art deepwater rigs, on which we are collaborating with Transocean to design, will comply with the highest industry standards for safety, operations and environmental protection for drilling deepwater wells.

The newbuild rigs will be constructed at the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. facility at Okpo, South Korea, where Transocean’s five Enhanced Enterprise-Class rigs were built and where the company currently has two other ultra-deepwater drillships under construction. Construction on the first drillship is expected to commence during the fourth quarter of 2013.

US Cal Dive Partners with Dutch Fugro for Toisa Paladin Charter

Cal Dive International, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a 50/50 strategic partnership with Fugro for the long-term charter of the DP2 Toisa Paladin, a 2007 purpose built, DNV classed, diving support vessel.

The charter party agreement with Toisa Pte Ltd will be shared equally between Cal Dive and Fugro and has a three-year term plus two six-month extension periods. Cal Dive and Fugro will bring together their respective expertise to jointly pursue the growing number of subsea projects to provide construction, diving, ROV and other services to the offshore energy industry.

The Toisa Paladin is currently working on its first project in Malaysia. Cal Dive also announced that it has entered into a three-year frame agreement with a major international oil and gas operator under which it expects to keep the Toisa Paladin utilized through the end of the year.

UAE: TGS to Charter Seismic Vessel Polarcus Amani

Polarcus Limited, a Dubai-based marine geophysical company, has signed a Letter of Intent with TGS-NOPEC Geophysical Company ASA (TGS) for the charter of the 12 – 14 streamer 3D seismic vessel POLARCUS AMANI. The charter, of minimum 5 months duration and subject to the execution of a service contract, will commence in April 2012 immediately after vessel delivery and shakedown.

POLARCUS AMANI is the first of two 12 – 14 streamer 3D seismic vessels ordered in November 2010 from Ulstein Verft AS of Norway. The vessels are being built to the ULSTEIN SX134 design and feature a high ice class (“ICE 1A super”), increased propulsion and other innovative efficiency enhancing features. The two newbuilds are scheduled for delivery end Q1 and end Q2 2012 respectively.
