The Netherlands: Amels 55-meter Yacht STEP ONE Completes All Tests
The brand new Amels 55-meter yacht, STEP ONE, had her first day out at sea on Tuesday, April 4th 2012. All tests were completed to the full satisfaction of classification bureau Lloyds Register and the Owner’s Representative, Moran Yachts & Ship.
Amels project manager Roeland Berrevoets commented: “This design has now been tried and tested, which means that there were no surprises. After a very productive day, everybody went home smiling.”
STEP ONE’s exterior is designed by the renowned British designer Tim Heywood and her full custom interior by Laura Sessa. She is the first in line of the 55 meters series and measures 660 Gross Tons. STEP ONE is part of the very successful Amels Limited Editions range, which bridges the gap between semi-custom and full custom yachts. There is a possibility that STEP ONE will be on display at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show in September.
Amels is busier than ever with 12 new construction projects and two major refits underway. The current Limited Editions range offers four models which range from 180 feet to 242 feet (55 to 74 metres), or in gross tonnage terms, from 650 to 1720 Gross Tons. All exterior designs are by Tim Heywood, whilst a number of owners opt for a fully customised interior design.
Amels has been part of the Dutch family-owned Damen Shipyards Group since 1991. The Damen Shipyards Group specialises in technically sophisticated vessels. With approximately 6,000 employees and 38 shipyards worldwide, around 150 vessels are delivered each year. The turnover in 2011 was 1.3 billion Euro with an annual growth of around 10%.

Billion Dollar Themed Mega-yachts
These days, owning a yacht is NBD. Like how McDonald’s supersized is now large, a mega-yacht is a super-yacht and a super-yacht is now a regular yacht. So what can these poor billionaires do to actually impress their friends? Buy one of these billion dollar themed mega-yachts of course! Yacht Island Design has designed two themed mega-yachts. The first is “The Streets of Monaco” based on the Principality of Monaco on the French Riviera. The second is modeled after a tropical island paradise.
“The Streets of Monaco” themed mega-yacht
For those not familiar with Monaco, it’s essentially the most “balling-est place on earth”. A popular tax haven, it is the top vacation spot for the world’s richest. It’s located on the beautiful French Riviera and is home of the Monaco Grand Prix and the famous Mote Carlo Casino. It’s only one square mile big and has the highest GDP in the world, with 2000+ millionaires and 5 billionaires as permanent residents. It has a monarchy with Prince Albert II as head of state. I had the chance to visit a few years back and I can confirm the Bentley Continental GT is their equivalent of a Honda Civic.
So for any billionaires who want to take a slice of Monaco with them, this 500 foot design is just what they need. It’s built on a much wider platform than your run-of-the-mill mega-yacht and features actual buildings instead of ship decks. It has three main zones. The “Oasis” is modeled after the gardens of Monaco, which features a full-featued spa and multiple pools and waterfalls, cascading into each other.The “Grand Atrium” is the main living area and suites. Features included a theater, library, casino, dance hall, wine cellar and Havana room. Most suites include their own reception room, dressing room and balcony.
The highlight is the “Streets of Monaco”. It has a scaled down version of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit that you can race on with actual F1 style go-karts. Yep, you heard me. It takes you on a tour of other famous Monaco locations, including the Hotel de Paris, Cafe de Paris, La Rascasse Hotel, Loews Hotel and the Monte Carlo Casino. There also is a tennis court and helipad. Yeah there’s a bunch of pool with swim up bars and Jacuzzis, you know the regular boring stuff you find on mega-yachts.
It also has two large sea-level garages for smaller yachts, its own submarine and “beach” level decks to let you swim and enjoy the ocean.
“Tropical Island Paradise” themed mega-yacht
This is their second and smaller theme at 300 feet long. Here you can play the opposite of the Survivor reality show on faux-tropical island with all the luxuries of a mega-yacht. The main feature is the top deck, which features a cove with cabanas and palm trees surrounding a large main pool. The pool is deep and even allows viewing out the front of the yacht through a large glass wall. The volcano doesn’t gush lava, it just creates a waterfall for the pool.
Underneath the pool, there is a recreation area for a assortment of expensive water toys, such as jet skis, kayaks and boats. Another fun yacht toy I’d add for an extra $100k would be the JetLev water jet pack. There is also a obligatory helicopter pad. When I get mine commissioned, my volcano will only flow with Cristal 24/7.
Yacht Island Design has two more designs in the works: one will be Oriental themed and the other Middle Eastern. They also will design a themed mega-yacht to your imagination. Maybe an Inception-themed yacht within a yacht. With the top deck all water with another smaller yacht on top? What kind of theme would you chose for your yacht?

The Emax Super Marine 45 utilizes Allison’s Hybrid technology, a dual mode (Series & parallel EVT) Electrically Variable Transmission that delivers the highest level of economy with the best performance. This system with years of proven reliability from Arctic to sub tropical environments is employed in thousands of Hybrid buses the world over as well as the GM fleet of Hybrid pickup trucks, the Hybrid Cadillac Escalade and surprisingly the Hybrid Bluetec S Class Mercedes Benz .

As a jet propelled Zero Carbon recreational watercraft she is the safest and by far the most Eco Friendly boat of her kind. The EPA estimates that registered recreational boats in the USA produce a staggering 330 million metric tons of CO2 per year. Switching from gasoline to Emax Solar Hybrid propulsion can reduce that figure by over 50% thereby reducing “global warming pollution” by more than a 160 million metric tons per year.

There are definitely preconceived notions that the exterior of a yacht is reflected on the interior.

These Awesome Explorer Yachts Will Transport You To The Ends Of The Earth

If you want to escape the usual boating crowd and get away to exotic places such as Patagonia, Alaska, and the Amazon, an explorer yacht is the way to go.
Paul Allen’s 414-foot megayacht, the Octopus, may be the best known example of an explorer yacht, having ventured as far as Ushuaia, Argentina, known as the “end of the world.”
These maidens aren’t always the prettiest ships, but they are a luxurious way to travel to your far off destination.
And most have all the amenities you’ll need right on board.

World’s Largest Solar-Powered Boat Circumnavigates Globe
PlanetSolar‘s TÛRANOR is currently on its way to becoming the first solar-powered boat to circumnavigate the globe. Driven by a silent, pollution-free electrical engine that is powered exclusively by solar energy, the PlanetSolar team has two goals in mind. The first objective is to show that current technologies aimed at improving energy efficiency are reliable and effective. The second is to advance scientific research in the field of renewable energy.
The world’s largest solar-powered boat has already been to Miami, Cancun, Brisbane, Hong Kong and just made its way to Vietnam. Measuring around 101 feet long and 49 feet wide, the $26 million TÛRANOR can comfortably transport 50 passengers.
The Swiss-designed, German-built ship is powered by over 5,380 square feet of solar paneling. The panels power two electric motors, which can reach 15 miles per hour. The panels can also soak up enough stored energy to power the boat in cloudy weather for three days. The excess energy is stored in a giant lithium-ion battery.
And, in case you were wondering how PlanetSolar came up the ship’s name, TÛRANOR is derived from the “Lord of the Rings” saga by J.R.R. Tolkien and translates to: “the power of the sun” and “victory.”
